Our Special Care Unit really lives up to its name. In our three bed unit, we care for ten to fifteen of our most special patients each month. These patients are with us while they recover from surgery or need critical care for any other reason. They are attended by a registered critical care nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We are very pleased to be installing a brand new heart monitoring system in the Special Care Unit. Each of our three beds will have its own heart monitor which keeps track of the patient's blood pressure, oxygen level, temperature, respiration rate, and heart rate. All of this information will then be automatically available to medical staff in both the emergency room and the surgical unit. This will enable doctors to monitor their patients' vital statistics very closely so they can track improvement or respond immediately to life threatening situations. The new system will increase our ability to provide our patients with the best care available.
The Special Care Unit is also getting a face lift. A redecoration project is currently underway and includes new paint, storage shelving, book shelving, curtains, and even a new bed with a built in scale so patients will not need to move to be weighed. With these changes, we hope to make each patient's stay with us as comfortable as possible.
